What do you consider the top tier of volume automotive marques? The question is not about auto groups. It also isn't which brand makes better cars, but which marque makes up that top tier of the public image.

I say Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen and Chevrolet. No more, no less. I originally included Hyundai but removed it upon further thought.

Is this just in the states or globally? Really I would only include Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, and Honda.

Volkswagen still seems niche in the states. Nissan just seems on the edge of being included.

But since I like giving my opinion, Ford has the best lineup of all of them.

That's hard to argue with, considering the favorable comparisons the Focus gets against things like the C7 and F12...

I would say VW, they have every genre of car covered.

Economy car: VW, skoda, Seat

Mid level car: VW and Audi

Luxury sedan: VW, Porsche, and Audi

Ultra luxury sedan: Porsche, Bentley, Audi

Sport cars: VW, Porsche, Audi, Bentley

Super Cars: Lamborghini, Audi, Porsche

Hyper Cars: Lamborghini, Bugatti, Porsche

Grand Tourer: Audi, Porsche, Bugatti, Bentley

Suvs: All except Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini (unless you count the LM001 and the SUV concept)

Trucks: VW and skoda

Wagons: VW and Audi and Porsche (if they would just make that damn gran turismo panamera concept.)

Public image I'd say goes to BMW. They get the posers as well as the die-hards that don't think they've gone soft yet. That badge is worth something to people... even if not for the right reasons. Kind of gives me a sad, but there it is.

Ferrari.
When you can make more money off of putting your logo on ridiculously expensive things, than from your cars, you have won. Everyone either wants a Ferrari or knows someone who does.

If this is from a U.S. perspective, I figure that sales of cars like the Juke, Altima and Pathfinder probably help prop up Nissan's brand image. I still feel like people don't think about Nissan otherwise, so I'd replace it with either Jeep or Dodge.

Jeep has the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and the new Cherokee, while Dodge has a lineup that includes the Dart, Charger, Challenger and Durango. The Compass/Patriot and Avenger/Journey are the weak spots of those brands, and I think they're due to be phased out/replaced anyway, so we're left with what I believe are solid product lines. Jeep leverages its off-roading marketing cache, while Dodge typically relies on 'Merica, flashy cars, or comedy/cleverness like in the Anchorman Durango ads. I think that people definitely noticed them, given the jump in Durango sales with the airing of said ads.

If we keep things globally you really should remove Honda before VW. Honda has become more of a niche manufacturer in Europe than what VW is in NA. Besides, VW sells more cars globally. The same goes for Chevy by the way, piss poor image and the whole brand will be discontinued in Europe in 2015. So that leaves us with Ford and Toyota.

My family have been driving Škodas for quite a while now, I'm even in the club, but I don't recall any trucks in the lineup, unless you count the Roomster and Yeti as trucks... :D

Yeah, it would appear that VW covers everything but the truck market.

If by 'truck', you mean pickup, there's the Amarok, though a bit small by US standards.

Kinja'd!!!

If we're talking proper trucks... VW owns 75% of MAN and 71% of Scania.

...both of which also produce busses and military grade vehicles.

And let's not forget Ducati, also VW owned.

Kinja'd!!!

It would appear VW truly does cover all bases. :)

I realise it's a van, not a truck, but don't forget about the Transporter:

And Ducatis are less-favored than Aprilias, thankfully.

How many world titles did the Ducs claim, again?

1 MotoGP and 13 SBK as well as a few others. :)

I don't quite understand your post...

A shitty conglomerate buys a shitty brand.

Aprilia has claimed 51 SBK world titles in all forms of motorcycle racing from GP (38), SBK (4), Supermoto (7) and Trial (9). Thank God they didn't ruin Aprilia and/or the Piaggio group!

Seems like you have some major beef with VAG. Maybe forgive and forget since it's the season to be jolly? :D
